The Island is changing

Improving the Island's highway network

During one of the most intensive periods of carriageway and footway surfacing work on the Island we have, in road terms alone, laid over 1,000,000 metres of carriageway surfacing, the equivalent of a road stretching from the Island to London and then onto Luton.

When you consider the volume of work being done on the Island, which is only 23 miles from West to East and 13 miles from North to South, where 69% of the roads are in rural areas with limited diversion routes and the challenges of working in a popular tourism destination when the traffic doubles in volume, then the achievement is really brought into focus. Our 2016 carriageway programme is the largest to date will be the most intensive period of road improvement work ever undertaken on the Island. Our footways resurfacing programme continues.

Drainage works for 2016 include the completion of a major drainage scheme at Brighstone, drainage investigation works on Fairlee Road and planning the design for a major drainage scheme at Steyne Road Bembridge. We have also completed a geotechnical scheme to help stabilise the carriageway at Newport Road, Ventnor.

Our structures team have strengthened Wootton Bridge and this completed on schedule. We are also working on the final installations as part of our Island-wide street lighting replacement programme.

Year round works include our highway inspections, operations and maintenance work, such as repairing potholes and other road defects, clearing overhanging branches, bollard repairs/replacements, sign reflectivity testing, street name plate repairs/replacements, park bench repairs, fly tipping clearance.
